Dundee Choral Union

Derek Clark was born in Glasgow and is an Honours graduate of the RSAMD and the University of Durham.

After further study at the London Opera Centre, he joined the Music Staff of Welsh National Opera in 1977, making his professional conducting debut, Handel's 'Tamerlano', with them in 1982. Thereafter he conducted a wide variety of operas for them by composers ranging from Handel and Mozart to Britten and Maxwell Davies. In 1997 he was appointed Head of Music at Scottish Opera. Since then his conducting repertoire has included Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, Humperdinck and Massenet, as well as Offenbach and Sullivan. More recently he has been associated with more contemporary composers, as conductor of Scottish Opera's highly successful 'Five:15-Operas made in Scotland' project, and has also premiered operas by Rory Boyle, Craig Armstrong, James MacMillan and Julian Wagstaff. He has been assistant to many eminent conductors over the years, including Sir Richard Armstrong, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Roger Norrington and Raymond Leopard.

As an accompanist he has appeared all over the country with both singers and instrumentalists, and he is a frequent guest coach at many of the colleges and at the National Opera Studio. He works as a composer and arranger producing works for his fellow professionals as well as for amateur performers and children.

He has been Music Director of DCU since 2011, and in June of 2014 this year was appointed Director of Music at St. Andrew's Kirk, Helensburgh.
